Tournaments
Like tennis or golf, speech tournaments are mostly invitational and your score is both individual and also contributes to a team score for team awards. There are three regulation rounds - meaning, you speak three times for three different judges and get scored by each. Some meets have a finals round, where the top 8 speakers from regulation rounds compete in a fourth round to three judges. Their scores are averaged to determine the first, second, third, etc. place. These meets mostly take place on Saturdays in late January, February, and March. The state tournament is in April.
BEFORE THE MEETS:
BEFORE THE MEETS:
- Make sure your dues are paid via Rschool (through activities - different from regular school functions like paying for lunches, etc.). If you don’t pay, you cannot go to the meet.
- Check the speech board for any upcoming meets or announcements.
- Sign up if you can go to the meet. We will get you the important information as soon as we can. This will have the time to be at the bus and approximate time of arrival home.
- Please let us know if you cannot make the meet so we can pay the tournament hosts accordingly.
- We will meet at school in front of the gym doors. Please have all your things with you. We will need to leave promptly in order to get to the meet on time.
- Dress in nice clothes -- no jeans, t-shirts, leggings, crop-tops, low-cut shirts, baggy pants, etc. The way you dress makes an impression on the judge and you want to be seen as professional and taking this seriously. If you need help determining what is professional and what is not, I will be glad to help.
- Bring your script backed with BLACK PAPER, a pencil or pen, a book or homework (to read/work on so you don’t get bored on the ride to and from or between rounds), and some money to purchase concessions (unless you bring snacks).
- Be sure to tell your parents what time we need to be at school and the approximate time we will return - you will be able to call them when we return if you need to do so.
- Do not change clothes until after the awards are given out. We still want to look professional when we get our awards.
- Please sit as a team during the awards presentation. We need to support one another!
